Full-time Director, User Experience

at Citrix Online in San Francisco

Position Summary
As Director of the User Experience department for Citrix Online, you will inspire, lead and grow a talented team of UX researchers, UX designers and technical editors to help deliver highly usable products and services. You will evangelize user-experience practices throughout the company.

Responsibilities
• Promotes a highly collaborative research, design and editorial culture, spreading user experience knowledge not only within the UX department, but also in other departments and with executives throughout Citrix Online. Motivates team members to research and teach user experience principles that improve product usability, consistent look-and-feel and brand reinforcement.
• Fosters a culture of design thinking, innovation and collaboration. Creates programs to keep the UX department and Citrix Online abreast of industry trends and advanced approaches to research and design. Supports the development and consistent use of design standards.
• Aggressively hires outstanding designers, researchers, editors and managers.
• Encourages individual and leadership growth. Motivates key contributors through compensation, promotion and work assignments. Rapidly initiates and manages improvement plans for under-performers.
• Provides clear, concise direction to direct reports that fosters learning and independent decision-making. Delegates challenging assignments to help employees advance their own careers. Manages conflicts thoughtfully, decisively and transparently.
• Identifies and prioritizes user experience problems and opportunities in the company. Seeks greater understanding of executive and customer needs. Diplomatically creates or motivates highly usable, useful and profitable solutions. Handles controversies, customer negotiations and opportunities to influence with thoughtful action and sensitivity.
• Embraces agile principles. Maintains transparent prioritization of work contemplated and work in progress, allowing all stakeholders to understand competing interests. Supports iterative user experience design, involving UX research and UX design at all stages of product development.

Qualifications and Requirements
• BS degree or equivalent in Graphic Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Computer Science or related fields and a minimum of 10 years of directly related work experience, with at least 3-4 years experience successfully managing UX designers or UX researchers. Advanced degree preferred, but not required.
• 5+ years experience leading multi-disciplinary teams including researchers and designers, conducting user experience research and executing User Experience Designs within an iterative software development process, with demonstrated success as a design or research manager, project manager or team lead on multiple complex projects.
• Personal passion and fervor for industry leading product usability and design excellence.
• Demonstrated expertise in interaction and/or visual design, reducing complex user tasks to a simple, intuitive and visually polished user experience for complex web and software applications.
• Direct experience with user experience research methodologies such as card sorting, usability testing, ethnographic research, customer interviews, surveys and focus groups.
• Direct experience with information architecture and interaction design principles and producing deliverables such as content organization, site maps or flowcharts, and developing user interfaces for Windows software or web applications.
• Desired experience integrating agile engineering practices (e.g., Scrum) and product management practices (e.g. story mapping) with user experience efforts.

This position can be located in Santa Barbara or San Francisco, CA. Light travel is associated with this role, specifically at the beginning.
