Full-time User Interface Designer - Electronic Arts

at Electronic Arts in Vancouver, Canada

User Interface Designer

EA Play4Free is seeking a User Interface Designer to join the Play4Free team in Burnaby to work on an exciting unannounced project. This is a temporary position for 12 months.

The Role

User Interface Designers fill a very valuable role within a game User Interface team. These experienced artists work in conjunction with UI Artists and the Art Director in multiple stages of a game development cycle. In early pre-production stages of a game cycle, the UI Designer’s main function is to work with the User Interface Team and the Design Team to design and implement compelling and usable User Interface concepts for Game Features. In later stages of the project the artist will use both industry-standard and proprietary tools to create and revise final User Interface Screens and Components for use in game User Interfaces. The UI Designer needs to work with both Engineering and Design to help define UI Requirements for Features and then create User Interfaces which meet those requirements.

The Necessary Skills

All UI Artists must have core strengths in Graphic Design, Information Design, and Typography. Applicants should show a portfolio which demonstrates skills in these core areas to be considered for an interview. UI Designers are also often called upon to use secondary skills in Illustration, Motion-Graphics Design, and Usability to create a compelling user experience for the game.

As a potential applicant, you should be very comfortable with Photoshop and Illustrator and be able to create variations of your work in a short period of time with a high degree of quality. AfterEffects 3DS Max/Maya, or Flash are also valuable skills to possess.

A personality which possesses an attention to detail and an eye for quality is necessary in this role. The ability to communicate verbally about composition, design, and user experience is necessary to excel in this role. As with all art-related jobs, receiving critiques with professionalism is a must. The flexibility to learn new tools quickly and adapt to meet the needs of a fast-moving project will also help any applicants. We prefer employees with a strong game vocabulary and love of the video game but will highly value your passion for any form of gaming or visual art.

This job is a good opportunity to develop the skills necessary to continue in the game development industry. It’s also a great way to learn new processes and broaden your artistic experience.

The Campus

The EA campus in Burnaby is an impressive state-of-the-art facility featuring an arcade, company game store, coffee bars, cafeteria, a fitness room, an indoor basketball court, and a full-size soccer field.
